The traveling exhibition Marimba opens in Porto on August 16
Marimba is a photographic exhibition that offers a sensitive and documentary perspective on the experiences lived during the field activities of the project bearing the same name.
Visitors will have the opportunity to view around thirty striking images that highlight the roots and ancestry of peoples from the countries involved in the Marimba project. The exhibition takes viewers on a journey to remote lands and exotic cultures, offering glimpses into different realities — some of which are still little known in Europe.
The exhibition runs until September 6 at the Museu do Porto – Palacete dos Viscondes de Balsemão, located at Praça Carlos Alberto, 71.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 AM – 5:30 PM
The Marimba Project
The Marimba project aims to promote and preserve musical production in Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and Timor-Leste through research, digitization, and dissemination. It also supports the international distribution of phonographic works and associated artists, seeking to contribute to the recovery and visibility of the cultural identity of the involved countries and regions.
In addition, the project works to foster socio-economic inclusion of women and the sustainability of professionals within the music sector.
This is a truly unprecedented initiative, focused on employability, innovation, and research in the field of music across the four countries — guided by the motto:
“Music, intangible heritage.”
As a transnational initiative, Marimba’s main visibility and communication platform is digital, enabling the dissemination of the project’s ongoing activities in a collaborative manner, with an active presence in each participating country.
Three years of travel
Over the past three years, the project team has carried out extensive travel to the target territories, resulting in a powerful collection of photographs — now brought together in this exhibition.
Captured by various photographers, the images portray the realities of the local cultures visited, reflecting both their ethnography and everyday life.
This is a must-see exhibition, promoted as part of an initiative funded by the European Union and co-financed and managed by Camões, I.P.O.
