The traveling exhibition Marimba opens in Porto on August 16
Marimba is a photographic exhibition offering a sensitive and documentary perspective on the experiences lived during the fieldwork activities of the project that shares its name.
Visitors will be able to view around thirty powerful images that reveal the roots and ancestry of peoples from the countries participating in the Marimba project. The exhibition invites the audience to journey through remote lands and explore diverse, often unfamiliar cultures, offering glimpses into realities that remain underrepresented in Europe.
The exhibition will remain on display until September 6 at the Museu do Porto – Palacete dos Viscondes de Balsemão, located at Praça Carlos Alberto, 71.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 AM – 5:30 PM.
About the Marimba Project
Marimba is an initiative aimed at valuing musical production in Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, and Timor-Leste through research, digitization, and promotion. The project also supports the international distribution of recordings and affiliated artists, with the goal of contributing to the recovery and dissemination of cultural identity in the participating countries and regions.
It further promotes the socio-economic inclusion of women and the sustainability of professionals in the music sector.
This is truly an unprecedented initiative, focused on employability, innovation, and research in the music field across these four countries — all under the motto:
“Music as intangible heritage.”
As a transnational project, Marimba’s main visibility and communication platform is digital, enabling collaborative content sharing and direct engagement from each participating country.
Three years of travel
Over the past three years, extensive travel to the target regions has resulted in the collection of a powerful and memorable series of photographs — now featured in this exhibition.
Captured by various photographers, the images portray the lived realities of local cultures, showcasing ethnography and daily life with depth and authenticity.
This is a must-see exhibition, promoted as part of an action funded by the European Union and co-financed and managed by Camões, I.P.
