Bahian artist Nara Couto is in Guinea-Bissau for an immersive experience as part of the project “Outras Áfricas,” aimed at promoting the fusion between Afro-Brazilian and African cultures, in dialogue with the country’s cultural, spiritual, and artistic traditions.
Throughout this month, Nara intends to connect with local musicians, dancers, and communities to explore the country’s religious and cultural practices.
Also acting as a cultural ambassador, the artist is preparing two projects to be released in May, on International Africa Day, May 25: a short poetry piece with the group Netos de Bandim, reflecting her encounter with local dance, and a single with artist Um Mbana, celebrating the artistic bridge between Bahia and Guinea-Bissau.
“Being here is a reunion with my history and an opportunity to build new bridges between Brazil and Africa. Guinean culture is incredibly rich and has so much to teach us,” emphasizes Nara Couto.
