This Saturday at 9 PM, Lisbon’s Coliseu dos Recreios will host a vibrant celebration of Guinea-Bissau’s music and culture. Headlined by the celebrated singer and composer Patche Di Rima, the event will feature an impressive lineup of artists, including Jery Bidan, Eneida Marta, Mamba Negra, Ammy Injay, Memu Sunhu, and Netos de Bandim.
The concert is dedicated to honoring the spirit of Mandjuandadi, a tradition deeply rooted in Guinea-Bissau’s history. These women’s groups, which emerged as a form of resistance during colonial times, continue to thrive today, not only in Guinea-Bissau but also within the diaspora in cities like Lisbon. They serve as both "entertainment groups" and "mutual aid networks," as described by Guinea-Bissauan singer and journalist Karyna Gomes in her article for Mensagem.
For one night, the Coliseu will transform into a celebration of resilience, tradition, and artistry, shining a spotlight on the extraordinary cultural contributions of Guinea-Bissau.
