The composer and ethnomusicologist David López Sáez, along with the Yetu Orchestra, has been offering concerts that blend a repertoire of classical international pieces and Angolan music with new arrangements.
In the concerts that he conducts, the Spanish David López Sáez, who collaborates with the Yetu Orchestra, presents new arrangements of Angolan songs for the orchestra. His most recent performance took place on Wednesday at the Arte e Cultura Foundation, in collaboration with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Angola.
In the first part of the concert, the Yetu Orchestra performed a classical repertoire, featuring works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, conducted by Cuban violinist Frank Abreu. Following this, David López conducted his new arrangements of Angolan songs for the orchestra.
For this initial collaboration with the Yetu Orchestra, according to David López, new arrangements were written, among which he highlights a new line of work focused on purely traditional Angolan music (in addition to urban popular music), with the aim of promoting its value, study, and dissemination.
As an ethnomusicologist, David López conducts research and field recordings of traditional music. For this concert, he arranged a traditional Bailundo song from the Katyavala women's group for the orchestra, based on a recording he made for the Marimba project, a project supported by PROCULTURA (an initiative financed by the European Union and the Camões Institute).
For several years, the composer and ethnomusicologist has been working on a project to transcribe Angolan music for the classical orchestra format, aiming to support the development of music in the country through the appreciation of its own culture and the identity of the Angolan people. This project has been supported since its inception by his country’s diplomatic representation.
