Katyavala Women's Group

The Katyavala are a cultural music and dance group consisting of over 100 women, founded in 1983 with the purpose of preserving, promoting, and valuing the ancestral traditions and customs of the region.
The voices of the Katyavala sing songs in the national Umbundu language, reflecting lessons inscribed in the collective memory, recovered through music, the use of native regional instruments such as the onhedjengo, ombulumbumba, katchenke, otchisandje, tchingunfu, kaluhi, kalyalya, and olunguaya, as well as the traditional folkloric dances of the Ovimbundu culture, known as elissemba, onhatcha, okatita, osawaya, okamusa, otchisosi, otchitiku, and nawãsindikile.
