Nara Couto

World

Nara Couto is a singer, songwriter, actress, dancer, creative artistic director and cultural diplomat. Her work, defined as Afro-Brazilian Jazz, celebrates the cultural richness of Brazil and Africa.

She has been a solo artist since 2017, and her debut came with the release of the single “Linda e Preta”, which became an anthem for the appreciation of female beauty in black communities in Brazil. Before that, she was a co-founder and mezzo-soprano of the Orquestra Afrosinfônica, between 2009 and 2018, one of the most relevant musical experiences of fusion between the classical and the popular in the contemporary Afro-Bahian scene.

Her artistic career began in dance, influenced by the beats of the Afro block Ilê Aiyê. From the age of 17 to 23, she was a member of the Balé Folclórico da Bahia, and as a dancer she worked with names such as Gilberto Gil, Margareth Menezes, Ivete Sangalo and Daniela Mercury. In music, she started as a backing vocalist, accompanying artists such as Daniela Mercury and Mateus Aleluia, before establishing her identity as one of the most powerful voices of the new Afro-Brazilian scene.
